The Image of Nurses

Abstract
The study was carried out to investigate the perception about nurses possessed by high school girls girls who are thought to be potential nursing students, thereby providing basic data useful for the recruitment program for new nursing students.
Three girls¢¥ high schools in Seoul were selected and the total number of respondents was 1,008 students or 51% of 1,959 students to whom questionaire was distributed. Investigation, was conducted during the period 1 to 13, September, 1975.
Questionaire prepared for the investigation was corrected and finalized through pretest. Items contained in the questionaire were classified largely into general trait of character, image on nurses, motive of applying for nursing school, social status of nursing professionand career life.
The data collected were key punched on IBM card and treated with computer.
The frequency distribution was calculated and chi square test was applied for statistical procedure with the adoption of alpha level 5%. The results obtained are summarized as follows:
1. 98.7% of the total respondents was found to continue their studies at a higher level, out of which 11.5% desired the study of nursing.
2. In the educational level of parents, 51.6% of fathers graduated from above college or university and 46% mothers graduated from below secondary school.
3. Most of the respondents (86.8%) revealed their experience wish ospitalization or visiting hospitals. This indicates their contact with nurses and physicians.
4. In the perception on the educational qualification of a nurse, 42.3% showed correct knowledge about the nursing education system and 59.5% of these who desired the study nursing also revealed the same.
5. Those who desired the study of health field showed a higher percentage in understanding about the role of nurse.
6. With regard to the kindness of nurse, only 40.9% showed positive response while 35% was negative.
7. 42.4% of the total respondents suggested beautiful appearance of nurse and 57.8% of those who desired the study of nursing also revealed the similar response.
8. In respect of the motive of applying for nursing school, 51.6% of the total respondents suggested economic reason and majority (53.5%) of those who desired the study of nursing also revealed the same resporse.
9. 56.9% responded that the social status of nursing profession belongs to the middle class.
10. Regarding the professional life of nurse, 54.1% expressed that it is better to engage in nursing profession only before marriage. It is hoped that these basic data will be of help for the nursing education in the future in relation to recruitment program.
